A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
