Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on 14 different times.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to seize a surprise advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the final seconds to send the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
